Spiro Agnew
Spiro Theodore Agnew (1918-1996) was a
Maryland politician and U.S. vice president from 1968 to 1973. He
resigned as vice president and later pleaded no contest to tax evasion
charges pursued by the IRS; the FBI investigated him for bribery, but he
was not prosecuted on that charge. This release consists of FBI records
concerning the bribery investigation as well as threats made against
Agnew. It ranges between 1969 and 1986 (mostly between 1969 and 1973).
This more comprehensive release replaces the more limited one made in
the 1990s that had been previously posted here on the Vault.

Edward Irving "Ed" Koch
Edward Irving "Ed" Koch (1924-2013) was a
former congressman and mayor of New York City. This release consists of
several files related to Koch. The bulk of the release consists of a
1977 investigation into extortion threats made against Koch that
included the forgery of a letter using the then congressman’s letterhead
and signature. There are parts of two other files also. The first
concerns a 1973 extortion matter and the second a foreign
counterintelligence matter that mentions Uruguayan military officials’
“irritation” with Koch; part of this file has been referred to another
agency for release as it contains that agency’s information.

U. S. Senator Robert Byrd
Robert Carlyle Byrd (1917-2010) served
as a U.S. Senator for the state of West Virginia from 1958 until his
death. This release consists of a large file of FBI correspondence with
the Senator and his office over a long period of time and numerous
smaller files dealing with threats and other criminal acts directed
against the Senator. The material in these files ranges in date from
1955-2003.

Hubert H. Humphrey
Hubert Horatio Humphrey, Jr. (1911-1978)
was a U.S. politician who served as mayor of Minneapolis, U.S. senator
from Minnesota, and U.S. vice president over the course of a long public
career. The more than 2,600 pages posted here were released previously
under FOIA. They consist of an extensive file that details the FBI’s
relationship with Humphrey from 1945 to 1974. This material contains
extensive cordial corrrespondence between Humphrey and the Bureau, the
results of background investigations related to Humphrey, and
investigations of threats of violence against him. There is also a
short file from 1970 in which the Bureau considered whether or not a
perjury investigation was warranted against Humphrey or former Howard
Hughes’ aide Robert Maheu; in the end, no investigation was pursued.

Senator Edward Moore “Ted” Kennedy
Edward Moore “Ted” Kennedy (1932-2009)
served as a U.S. senator from 1962 to 2009. The files below range from
1961 to 2001. The bulk of this material concerns FBI investigations into
threats of violence and extortion claims against Senator Kennedy and
other public officials. Parts 1 to 18 were previously released in 2010.

Daniel David "Dan" Rostenkowski
Daniel David "Dan" Rostenkowski
(1928-2010) was a U.S. Representative from Illinois from 1959 to 1995
who served as chairman of several key committees in Congress. Following a
scandal involving the House of Representatives Post Office, he pled
guilty to reduced charges of mail fraud in 1996 and served 17 months in
prison before receiving a presidential pardon. Parts 1-8 were released
in June 2011. Parts 9-13 were released in August 2011. Parts 14-19 were
added on 8/30/2011. Parts 20-27 were added on 10/4/2011

Geraldine Ferraro
Geraldine Anne Ferraro (1935-2011) was
an attorney, a politician, a member of the U.S. Congress, and the first
female candidate for Vice President from a major American party. This
release consists of material concerning threats made against Ferraro and
others, as well as an FBI investigation into allegations that Ferraro
had violated campaign finance laws (no charges were ever filed).

Watergate
On June 17, 1972, several people broke
into the Democratic National Committee Headquarters; they were
discovered by an on-site guard and were arrested by local police.
Subsequent investigations by the FBI, Congress, and the media showed
that these intruders were connected to the campaign staff of President
Richard Nixon. The White House under Nixon worked to cover-up this
connection, and subsequent revelations led to articles of impeachment
being drawn up against Nixon and his subsequent resignation in 1974.
These files, released many years ago, document the FBI’s investigation
into the break-in and related issues between 1972 and 1979.

Robert Sargent Shriver, Jr
Robert Sargent Shriver, Jr. (1915-2011)
was a politician and social reformer who served in the Kennedy and
Johnson administrations and ran for president as a Democrat in 1976.
This release consists of several FBI files concerning Shriver, including
a foreign counterintelligence investigation into whether or not an
acquaintance of his was a Soviet agent, background investigations
conducted when he was nominated for government positions, and
miscellaneous references.

Abbie Hoffman
Abbot Howard "Abbie" Hoffman (1936-1989)
was a political and social activist, especially in the 1960s. The FBI
investigated Hoffman under anti-riot laws and as a domestic security
threat. The files in this release range from 1968 to 1973 and cover
Hoffman’s role as a leader in the Yippie Party (Youth International
Party), his role in anti-war protests at the 1968 Democrat National
Convention in Chicago, and his subsequent trials as one of the “Chicago
Eight” conspiracists.

Vincent Foster
Vincent Foster
Vincent Foster (1945-1993), a prominent lawyer from Arkansas, was the
Deputy White House Counsel to President Clinton from 1991 to 1993.
Depressed by critical media comments, Foster took his own life on July
20, 1993 at Fort Marcy Park in Virginia. U.S. Park Police led the
investigation into Foster’s death. This release details FBI assistance
in the investigation, including information concerning a letter written
by Foster, handwritten case notes, and the medical examiner’s report
that ruled his death a suicide.

Claudia Johnson
Claudia Alta "Lady Bird" Taylor Johnson
(1912-2007) was the wife of President Lyndon B. Johnson and First Lady
of the United States. This release consists of files concerning threats
against her and others. Other files in the release concern security
arrangements regarding her travels. The material ranges from 1964 to
1989.

Everette Hunt
Everette Howard Hunt, Jr. (1918-2007),
commonly known as E. Howard Hunt, is most known for his role in
engineering the 1972 Watergate break-ins. This release consists of a
1981-1982 file concerning Hunt’s request for a presidential pardon and a
special inquiry file that contains background investigations of Hunt
between 1948 and 1971.

Jesse Helms
Jesse Alexander Helms, Jr. (1921-2008)
served as a U.S. senator from North Carolina from 1973 to 2003. This
release consists mainly of FBI investigations into threats against
Helms. There is also material from other types of files concerning him.
These materials range from 1971 to 1999.
