The 1991 Timor Gap Agreement needs to be
reviewed

business communication forum has urged Indonesia's new government to review the
1991 Timor Gap Agreement, saying that it is greatly in favour of Australia.
"If the new government does not pay due attention, I believe that the oil
exploration project in the Timor Shelf will only benefit Australia," Ferdi
Tanoni, chairman of the Communication Forum among East Nusa Tenggara (NTT),
East Timor and North Australia Businessmen, said here.
According to
Ferdi, one of the important points in the review is whether the so-called Timor
Gap is actually situated in East Timor territory. Ferdi told that, with East
Timor's eventual secession following the popular ballot on August 30, 1999,
Australia has become more confident to control all oil fields in the Timor Gap.
"I think Australia will control the whole
Timor Shelf, especially because East Timor as a new country will focus its
attention on forming its government," he said.
Ferdi claimed that
Australia's partisan attitude in the process of the popular consultation in
East Timor indicated that the country had certain political and economic
objectives related to the area.
"In
order to enable it to control all oil fields in the Timor Shelf, Australia had
resorted to various designs to separate East Timor from Indonesia. And this was
accomplished by the popular ballot," Ferdi said.
Ferdi said
Australian businessmen had seen the good prospects of oil explorations in the
Timor Shelf, and invested more than A$ 10 bn.

Australia's Minister of Trade and Asia Relations, Daryl Manzie, disclosed in
Darwin in July that his country would enjoy significant business opportunities
